becoming me

a film by
Martine De Biasi

SYNOPSIS

Becoming me is the intimate portrait of the changing relationship between the director and her first love. We follow Marian, born female, through all the doubts and fears of the dawning realization that Marian feels male. With the decision to become what he truly is, he might lose everything he has: his job, his family, his friends, his life.
Marian’s story is the story of the struggle to live in a body that is not owned, in a role that is not accepted, trapped in a traditional society where being different means not to belong.

CORE CONCEPT

The relationship between individuality and social behaviour defines our lives, and for the most part we are not even aware of it. And if we are not aware of it, how can we ever truly be ourselves? This film wants to ask, through the observation of Marian’s life and the environment he lives in, what it means to be a woman or a man in our society. And – maybe more simply – this movie is a portrait of Marian and his struggle to find himself.

So why do you want to become a man?
I don’t know if I actually will become a man. I’m scared.

I know, but why do you even think of becoming a man… I mean, you are going to start therapy tomorrow. There must be a reason!
Because for all my life I’ve felt like a man. I think about myself as a man. I behave as a man. In relation ships, I am a man…

And changing your body physically to match your ideal of a male body will make you more comfortable?
I want all the thinking and fussing over emotional stuff to stop. I just want to be able to decide for one thing or the other, and men are like that.

So, you think that becoming a man gives you more control over your life?
Yes. It’s the testosterone.

The testosterone?
Yes. It gives you a clear head.
